Languedoc is one of the most varied and beautiful regions in France. The superb beaches at Gruissan and Narbonne are less than an hour away. In winter, the ski slopes of Ax Les Thermes and Andorra are easily accessed.
There are two UNESCO World Heritage listed sites on the doorstep : Cité de Carcassonne - a C19th romantic re-evocation of the medieval citadel, and the Canal du Midi which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean.
Fresh seafood on the beach at Le Poulpe, Leucat - or fine dining at the Michelin starred Barbacane in La Cité, Carcassonne - are among the gastronomic highlights.
This is also wine country. From the robust reds of the Languedoc (like Minervois, Corbières, and Fitou) and the sweet fortified wines of Roussillon (Banyuls, Maury) to the aromatic whites and sparklings (Gaillac, Limoux), there is something for every palate. Limoux, in particular, in the western hills south of Carcassonne has an ancient reputation for its fine traditional Blanquette method fizz.
